Stéphane Charpentier is a French photographer and visual artist, born in Lyon in 1976. His central practice, rooted in black-and-white analog photography, develops through long-term series, exhibitions, and monographs.
His work also extends into various forms that closely combine image and sound, including short experimental films, music videos, performances, as well as the creation and artistic direction of collective projects bringing together visual and sound artists.
Stéphane Charpentier engages an introspective photographic language to build enigmatic analog series. His high contrast black-and-white images catch moments from an endless vision suspended between humanity’s struggles and hopes. For nearly twenty years, he has been developing an ongoing body of work entitled Radiance, from which he gradually draws distinct sequences intended for publications, exhibitions, and screenings combining image and sound. Since his first exhibitions in Barcelona and at Galerie Le Château d’Eau in Toulouse, he has regularly presented his work in France and abroad.
He has published the monographs The Core with Void, The Eclipse with Sun/Sun, and Trois mers et quatre terres with Le Mulet, in collaboration with Damien Daufresne. He is represented by Galerie Françoise Besson in Lyon, with whom he has developed several projects, including the exhibition The Eclipse, supported by the Centre national des arts plastiques.
He creates short experimental films, installations and music videos.
He collaborates frequently with sound artists or musicians, and took part to the creation of the band Oiseaux-Tempête.
He is curating the Temps Zero projects since 2013
