RADIANCE

RADIANCE
2003 – present / analog photography

Radiance is an open-ended, constantly evolving work conceived as a laboratory, from which photographer Stéphane Charpentier draws to create individual series for exhibitions and publications. Drawn from an archive that has been growing for more than twenty years, the images are assembled into sequences and motifs that are continually recomposed from one project to the next. Radiance also unfolds as an evolving photographic film, presented in screenings accompanied by live sound performances by Alyssa Moxley.

At once existential, poetic and sociological, the work casts a gaze on human beings, their dualities and their relationship to the world. Beneath the apparent timelessness of analog photography, the artist immerses us in the tensions of the contemporary world, its divisions, its shadows and its light. At the heart of the chaos, the individual appears caught in the grip of forces and systems beyond their control, while also contributing to what confines and alienates them. It explores these polarities not to oppose them, but to grasp the point at which they coexist, resonate with one another and are transformed, always allowing resilience and hope to emerge.

Reality remains fragmentary and uncertain, a play of reflections whose depth must be explored. The photographs seek what lies beyond appearances without ever prescribing a fixed reading, leaving viewers free to uncover their meanings through their own sensory experience. In this encounter between image and gaze, something singular takes place: places become mental territories, gradually opening onto a symbolic and metaphysical questioning of existence.
